It's either a slow week of news this post Thanksgiving week or there is a feud brewing between Austin and the mighty New York Times....
The Nov. 25, 2006 edition of The New York Times doesn't give Austin credit for the entire 'World.' The newspaper called Austin the Live Music Capital of the South.
The Times reporter responded by e-mail to a question about the title change. "I don't think you've been downgraded. I think you've become a little sensitive, though!" Shaila Dewan wrote.
Here is the article that exposed the "Music Capital" discrepancy. While some Austinites have all but taken to arms, I think this could just be a case of a careless oversight by the reporter. The crux of the story highlights the youth movement in the US and shows Austin in a positive light.
Overall, I think it is a minor gaffe and one that the reporter will most likely get right the next time. I mean, Austin is not even in the "South" but rather in the South West. I guess it may all be the same to a New Yorker though.
